Prestigious and internationally acclaimed Skoll Foundation awards announced for 2018

Skoll Award follows Magsaysay Award (2011) and Zayed Future Energy Prize (2018)  for SELCO’s innovative energy solutions

“Skoll Foundation has awarded its prestigious annual Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship for the year 2018 to SELCO founded by Harish Hande for revolutionizing the concept of bringing sustainable energy solutions to the poor”.

The Skoll Foundation presents the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship each year to a select group of social entrepreneurs whose innovations have already had significant, proven impact on some of the world’s most pressing problems, and invests directly in the promise of even greater impact at scale.

About Skoll Foundation

Skoll Foundation was created by Jeff Skoll in 1999 who as the first full time employee and first president of eBay successfully led the company’s inaugural plan and its initial public offering. The foundation strives to identify and select social entrepreneurs who have significantly contributed in inventing solutions for the pressing problems in the world and have had great impact on the society.

Since 1999, the Skoll Foundation has invested approximately $400 million worldwide, including the Skoll Award to 122 social entrepreneurs and 100 organizations on five continents in continuum of funding and support for social entrepreneurs, and in partnerships and other collaborations that help social entrepreneurs and other innovators scale their impact.

Each awardee receives a three-year core support to scale their work and increase their impact. They also gain leverage through their long-term participation in a global community of visionary leaders and innovators dedicated to solving the world’s most pressing problems.

Recognizing Harish and his organization’s work in the areas of environmental sustainability, education, economic opportunity, health, and rural entrepreneurship, the Skoll team selected SELCO for the 2018 award out of 6 finalists.The award ceremony is scheduled on April 11, 2018 at Oxford, United Kingdom.

“The SKOLL award will push more responsibility on us to take forward our mission to utilize sustainable energy as a catalyst to reduce poverty in an inclusive manner. SELCO plans to leverage the award’s network to scale up its work in the states of North East, where it believes the need is the most” said Dr. Hande, on being awarded with the Skoll award.
